Suffern is conveniently located just off the New York State
Thruway, which provides quick and easy access to the Tappan Zee
Bridge, New York City and upstate regions. Suffern also connects
with Route 59, known as the “
Main Street
” of
Rockland
County
. Suffern’s useful location gives residents access to dozens of
shopping centers and malls in and around the village. All major area
airports are within 35 miles of the village. One of the area’s
major medical centers can be found in Suffern in
Good
Samaritan
Hospital
as well as the county’s largest education institution,
Rockland
Community College
. The
Suffern
Village
Museum
provides a historical background on the village’s roots. Suffern
is part of the
Ramapo
Parks
and Recreation Department, which currently includes approximately
525 acres of mostly developed land. There are 14 parks with
facilities that include two outdoor swimming pools, the
award-winning18-hole Spook Rock Golf Course, two recreation
buildings, 18 tennis courts, eight handball courts, picnic groves,
basketball courts, ball fields, playgrounds, bocce courts, jogging
and bicycle paths, ponds for fishing and ice skating, an
amphitheater, an exercise trail, and a gazebo for concerts and
nature areas. Students in Suffern attend the award-winning
Ramapo
Central
School District
, which includes five elementary schools, one middle school and one
high school.
